Halloween Safety & Comfort Tips for Pet Parents
Halloween doesn’t have to be a spooky night for our fur kids! Between costumes, candy, and constant doorbell rings, it can be an overwhelming evening for pets. With just a few simple precautions, we can make sure Halloween is fun for us and safe for them!
Keep Pets Secure During Trick-or-Treat Hours
The constant door opening and Halloween noise can make pets curious or even anxious. Keep your dog or cat safely in another room when greeting trick-or-treaters to prevent escapes or accidental scares. Use baby gates to separate them from the front door, or keep them in a room with a closed door.
Consider Your Pet When Choosing a Costume
Dressing up can be fun, but only if your pet enjoys it! Avoid costumes that restrict movement, cover the face, or cause discomfort. If your pet seems uncomfortable, skip the outfit altogether and opt for a festive bandana or seasonal collar instead. Comfort always comes first.
Additionally, it's important to keep in mind that some pets may be afraid of our costumes, and things like masks can be triggering.
Keep Candy Out of Reach
Chocolate and many candies (especially those containing xylitol) are toxic to pets. Stay one step ahead of an emergency; Make sure all treats are stored securely and that wrappers are properly discarded.
Minimize Doorbell Stress
If the constant ringing is stressful for your pet, consider setting up a self-serve candy bowl outside instead. You can still take part in the fun while keeping your pet calm and relaxed indoors.
A sound machine can also help to drown out the noisy festivities outside and provide your pet with a little bit of peace.
With a little preparation, you can keep your pet safe, calm, and comfortable while still enjoying the fun of Halloween. 🐾
