Raw Feeding Doesn't Have to Be Complicated. Start Here.
One of the questions I hear most often is:
"I want to feed my dog or cat better...but where do I even start?"
Whether you rave about raw feeding or just starting to look for ways to add more fresh food to the bowl, I'm glad you're asking the question.
At Woof Creek, we believe nutrition doesn't have to be all or nothing. You don't have to throw out the kibble, buy another freezer and become an expert in pet nutrition overnight. For most families, the best place to begin is simply by taking one thoughtful step toward fresher, less processed, species-appropriate food.
This is what Rawgust is about. Become curious about what's in your pet's bowl, learn along the way, and discover what works best for the dog or cat in front of you. Because every healthier bowl starts with a single decision.
What Is Rawgust?
August has become known in the pet wellness community as Rawgust, a month dedicated to exploring raw and fresh feeding and encouraging pet parents to think differently about what's in the bowl.
Unfortunately, I think Rawgust sometimes gets misunderstood. People hear "raw feeding" and immediately picture buying a second freezer, calculating nutrient ratios, sourcing organ meats, and memorizing feeding percentages before dinner tomorrow.
No wonder it feels intimidating! But Rawgust doesn't have to mean making your pet's entire diet raw overnight.
It might mean adding a spoonful of fresh food as a topper. It might mean replacing one meal a week with a complete fresh or freeze-dried meal. It might mean slowly working toward feeding half fresh and half kibble. Or maybe you're already comfortable enough to feed a complete commercially prepared raw diet.
There's no single "right" starting point. The goal is to start moving the bowl toward more fresh, minimally processed, species-appropriate food in a way that works for you and your fur kids.
Where Are You on Your Journey?
My path with food is probably a little different from yours.
I grew up in kitchens, became a chef, spent more than 35 years cooking professionally, and eventually found myself diving deep into canine nutrition. I genuinely enjoy learning about ingredients, nutrient profiles, and how food influences health.
But my path doesn't need to become your path. You don't need to become a chef or spend your evenings reading nutrition textbooks before you can make a meaningful change.
Whether your pet eats kibble, canned food, gently cooked meals, freeze-dried raw, or a homemade diet, my goal is to meet you where you are. I want to help you understand your options and encourage you to take the next thoughtful step forward.
How to Start Raw Feeding Your Dog or Cat
One of the biggest mistakes people make is believing they have to overhaul everything at once. But great news: You don't.
Look at the bowl you're already feeding and ask yourself one simple question:"What's one small improvement I can make?"
Maybe that's adding a little fresh meat. Maybe it's incorporating whole foods like eggs or sardines. Maybe it's replacing a portion of kibble with a complete fresh food. Small changes build momentum.
As you begin introducing fresh foods, pay attention to your pet. Notice their appetite. Watch stool quality. Observe their body condition, energy level, enthusiasm at mealtime, and overall well-being.
Food gives us feedback if we're willing to pay attention. Make one thoughtful change. Observe. Learn. Then decide what comes next.
Do You Need to Feed 100% Raw?
This is where I think many people become overwhelmed unnecessarily. Adding fresh food to your pet's bowl and formulating your pet's entire diet are two very different things.
If you start adding fresh foods alongside a commercially complete diet, you don't suddenly need to become a pet nutritionist. You're simply improving what's already there.
The conversation changes when you're responsible for providing most - or all - of your pet's daily nutrition. That's when nutritional balance becomes critically important.
The good news is that you don't have to formulate those diets yourself. Today there are many high-quality commercially prepared fresh, frozen, and freeze-dried foods that are designed to provide complete and balanced nutrition while allowing pet parents to feed less processed foods with confidence.
That's a lot less intimidating than trying to earn a degree in pet nutrition by next Tuesday.
Every Meal Is an Opportunity
One of the reasons I enjoy talking about nutrition is because we get to make this decision every single day. Every meal is another opportunity to nourish the animal who shares our life.
Sometimes progress looks like adding one fresh ingredient. Sometimes it looks like transitioning to a new food. Sometimes it simply starts by becoming curious about the ingredients already listed on the bag sitting in your pantry.
Those small decisions add up.
Where You Start Isn't Where You Have to Stay
This may be the part of Rawgust that matters most to me.
Meeting you where you are doesn't mean I want to leave you there.
I'm not interested in making somebody feel guilty because there's kibble in the bowl today. Shade doesn't teach anybody anything. I'd much rather help you look at that bowl and ask, What's my next step?
That's how I think about wellness in general. We learn. We make a change. We pay attention. Then we keep moving forward.
My path doesn't need to become your path. You don't need 35 years in professional kitchens, and you certainly don't need to spend your evenings going down the nutritional rabbit holes that I enjoy going down. But I am going to keep encouraging you to become curious about what's in that bowl and what else is possible.
That's what I mean when I say I'll meet you where you are. I'll meet you there, but I won't stop encouraging you to take the next step.
You aren't doing this alone. I'm holding the leash with you.
So this Rawgust, start where you are. Learn something. Try something fresh. Watch your fur kid. And when that starts feeling comfortable, let's see where the next step takes us.
In our next blog, we'll tackle one of the biggest questions people have about raw feeding: food safety. The truth is, your kitchen probably already knows more than you think.
Until then, start where you are. Try something fresh. Watch your pet.
And when that starts feeling comfortable, let's see where the next step takes us.
