Is Kelp Good for Dogs and Cats? Here’s What Every Pet Parent Should Know
Walk down the pet supplement aisle (or browse online for a few minutes), and you'll notice kelp popping up everywhere.
Dental powders. Gut health supplements. Skin and coat formulas. Multivitamins. Even some joint products.
So what makes this ocean-grown ingredient so popular?
The short answer: kelp is one of nature's most nutrient-dense whole foods.
Rich in naturally occurring minerals, trace elements, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds, kelp has earned its place in many thoughtfully formulated pet products. When used appropriately, it can be a valuable addition to a dog's or cat's overall nutrition.
But like many things in nutrition, more isn't always better.
Why Is Kelp Used in Pet Supplements?
Kelp is a type of seaweed that naturally contains a wide variety of nutrients, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, copper, and iodine. Like many whole foods, it's a package of nutrients working together.
Depending on the formulation, products may include kelp to help provide:
- Naturally occurring trace minerals
- Whole-food nutritional support
- Digestive and microbiome support
- Skin and coat wellness
- Dental support
- Overall nutritional balance
One of the reasons holistic veterinarians have long appreciated kelp is that it provides many nutrients in their naturally occurring form rather than as synthetic ingredients.
Quality Matters
One fascinating thing about kelp is how it grows.
Unlike land plants, kelp absorbs nutrients directly from the surrounding seawater. That's one reason it's so rich in minerals . . . BUT it also means the quality of the water where it's harvested matters.
Thoughtfully sourced kelp harvested from clean, cold waters is generally preferred because it helps reduce the risk of unwanted environmental contaminants and provides greater consistency from batch to batch.
When choosing any supplement containing kelp, look for companies that are transparent about their sourcing, testing, and quality standards. (You can always find Woof Creek’s Certificates of Analysis here.)
The Part Many Pet Parents Don't Realize
Kelp is also one of nature's richest sources of iodine.
Iodine is an essential nutrient that helps support healthy thyroid function. The thyroid influences metabolism, body temperature, growth, energy production, and many other important processes throughout the body.
Dogs and cats need adequate iodine. However, like many nutrients, more isn't always better.
Complete + balanced commercial pet foods are already formulated to provide appropriate iodine levels, and many supplements also contain kelp or other marine ingredients.
That means it's possible for your pup (or kitty) to receive iodine from several different sources without us realizing it.
The Bigger Concern Isn't Kelp …
It's Supplement Stacking
This is where things can become a little tricky.
Imagine a dog receiving:
- A dental powder containing kelp
- A gut support supplement containing seaweed
- A skin and coat product with marine algae
- A commercial food that already provides adequate iodine
None of these products are necessarily inappropriate on their own. But together, they may provide considerably more iodine than intended.
This is known as supplement stacking, when multiple products unknowingly supply the same nutrient.
It's one of the reasons we encourage pet parents to occasionally step back and look at their pet's entire wellness routine instead of evaluating each product individually.
Does That Mean You Should Avoid Kelp?
Not at all. Kelp isn't something to fear.
In fact, it can be an incredibly valuable ingredient when it's thoughtfully sourced, appropriately formulated, and used as part of a balanced nutritional plan.
The goal is to understand where it's coming from and avoid unnecessary overlap if multiple products already contain iodine-rich ingredients.
A Few Simple Questions to Ask
Before adding any new supplement, it's worth asking:
- Does my pet actually need this?
- Am I already feeding another product that contains kelp or seaweed?
- Does my pet's food already provide sufficient iodine?
- Am I adding this ingredient for a specific reason? or just because it sounds healthy?
These questions can go a long way toward building a more intentional wellness routine.
Our Philosophy at Woof Creek
We believe kelp can be an excellent whole-food ingredient. We also believe that every ingredient should have a purpose.
At Woof Creek, we aren't interested in recommending the most supplements possible. We're interested in helping pet parents build thoughtful wellness routines based on what their individual pet actually needs.
Sometimes that means adding a supplement. Sometimes it means recognizing that your pet is already getting exactly what they need.
Good nutrition isn't about adding more ingredients, it's about understanding how they work together.
Wondering About Kelp in Woof Creek Products?
We believe pet parents should know what's in their supplement AND why it's there.
Some Woof Creek formulations contain thoughtfully sourced kelp because it provides naturally occurring trace minerals as part of a broader nutritional approach. We also recognize that many pets receive nutrients from multiple foods, treats, and supplements, which is why we encourage looking at the whole picture rather than any single ingredient.
If you ever have questions about kelp, iodine, or how our products fit into your pet's existing routine, we're always happy to help. Reach out to our team at bark@woofcreek.com. We're here to help you build a thoughtful wellness plan, not just recommend another product.
